Solar energy businessman, Joakim Byström, has been granted 3 million SEK from The Swedish Savings Bank Foundation in Norrland to develop a solar energy laboratory in Härnösand. Joakim Byström is behind the two-year program for solar energy technicians which has started in Härnösand and is the Managing Director for Absolicon Solar Concentrator AB. Recently he was awarded WWF's Carl Mannerfelt Prize and the company Absolicon was nominated this week for the Globe Award 2008.

“More and more people are beginning to understand that solar energy is an important part of the solution to the world’s energy needs. The new laboratory will give Swedish companies and researchers the opportunity to be the best in the world,” says Joakim Byström. The Swedish Savings Bank Foundation in Norrland is supporting the laboratory with three million SEK, funds which will be invested in advanced measurement equipment. The laboratory, which will complement the two-year solar energy technicians program and the businesses that have grown in Härnösand, shall be world-leading in Sweden's speciallty area of reflectors and solar energy. In order to run the laboratory, “The Foundation for Research on Concentrated Sunlight” has been founded. The reseach foundation will develop a unique collection of advanced measurement equipment for concentrating systems that can be used by universities and companies.
