A newly established organization will help Swedish cleantech companies to succeed in India. “The need for new solutions is tremendous in the energy sector”, says S Raghupathy, Executive Director of Confederation of Indian Industry, CII at a meeting with Johan Sandberg and Joakim Byström from Absolicon.

Absolicon Solar Concentrator is one of four Swedish companies that joined the Indo-Swedish innovation platform. The organization is financed by the Swedish Energy Agency and will connect Swedish cleantech companies with Indian companies, primarily in the industrial sector.

Absolicon is planning to set up a manufacturing facility in India and has already installed a demo of an Indian hospital. The plant produces heat, electricity and steam.

“Concentrated solar energy can provide the Indian industry with the ability to self-produce the energy they need, instead of buying oil and gas,” says Johan Sandberg, CEO of Absolicon.

The energy supply and dependence on fossil fuels is one of the main hinders to an even stronger economic growth in India, and there is growing awareness and governmental programmes that favour promotion of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. Solar energy is one of the most politically prioritised areas in India, which among other measures launched a specific programme for solar thermal projects. Technology adaptation is a crucial element of a successful market entry in a foreign country, especially when the economic and social climates differ so much as in Sweden and India.

The official launch of the Indo-Swedish Innovation Platform took place during the Energy Efficiency Summit in Hyderabad on 24th of August, where a memorandum of Understanding has been signed with the Indian partners, Confederation of Indian Industry, CII.

CII is a nation-wide and highly respected industry association present in all Indian regions. It is a non-government, not-for-profit, industry led and industry managed organisation that works through partnering industry and government to create a greener growth in India. The closest partner of the Innovation Platform is the Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre in Hyderabad The Centre is an institution of national scale, setting standards and promoting best practice in environmental technologies in industry and buildings, setting among others an Indian certification standard for Green Buildings.

The Innovation Platform is targeted at Swedish cleantech SMEs at early to growth stages, having a proven technology yet willingness to adapt to new markets and a global growth ambition. Common for Swedish innovation companies is that often the home market is not large enough, and therefore they have to start exporting and enter foreign markets much earlier. This is where a combination of governmental support and local business expertise will help companies find the right partners in India and see them through the first steps.

With an established partnership and a demonstration project already in place, Absolicon has all the opportunities to build up a strong business case for the Indian market. The role of the Innovation Platform will be to help identifying the right access points to the target market and support Absolicon with the fine-tuning their product offering to local conditions. These questions lie within the core competence of the CII Green Business Centre.

This magazine is a way of showing those of you with an interest in Absolicon what we’re doing these days. We’re a company built on the understanding that solar energy is the only source of energy that can independently fulfill mankind’s energy needs and that concentrated solar energy is an important part of the solution to the world’s energy problems.

Absolicon has developed unique expertise in building solar energy systems and can realize the vision of renewable energy that so many of us have. During the past 12 months, we’ve concentrated on completing reference installations. We can now present an impressive portfolio of installations in various areas – for hospitals, hotels, industry and district heating networks. Moreover, we have installations in different climatic zones on three continents.

We’re now prepared to begin selling our products on a global market. This has required major effort by all – open-minded customers, patient investors, industrious suppliers and skilled staff. We’re now adapting our organization and turning outwards. I was at a primary school recently and talked about solar energy. The children were fully convinced that today’s energy systems with coal and oil are wrong and they didn’t understand why everyone wasn’t using solar energy instead. When I tried to explain that major investments are necessary and that it takes time to change an old system, the children showed no understanding. “If you know what needs to be done, you should just do it,” as one eight-year-old boy put it.

But it costs to sell in larger projects, and the time between the first contact and delivery is long. The Swedish projects have often taken two years from when the customer gives the go-ahead until the completed field is in place. Planning, financing, applications, building permits, negotiations – they all take time. Despite this, we have progressed rapidly in going from technical ideas to full-scale installations. During 2011, we had a market share of 20 percent for all solar heating in Sweden in larger installations.

We’re now moving from projects of a few hundred square meters to tendering projects of thousands or tens of thousands square meters. We’ve even signed agreements to build solar collector factories in Germany and India (see article at page 2).

Welcome to Absolicon!

The installation will be connected to the district heating system and surplus heat will go to households in Härnösand. The electricity produced will power lighting and fans in the building.

“We’ve been involved in the new transit center from the start, and it’s gladdening that the contractor NVS has now chosen six of our solar collectors for the building,” says Johan Sandberg, president of Absolicon.

The new transit center will be finished in the spring of 2013 and travelers will then be greeted by rooftop solar collectors that track the sun during the day to maximize power generation.

“I believe that Härnösand wants to use the installation to signal that it is a city with a long tradition in the field of energy, with both academic institutions and businesses at the leading edge,” says Johan Sandberg.

Construction of Psykiatrins Hus, a new psychiatric clinic in Uppsala, is rapidly progressing and it is now clear that a portion of the facility’s electricity and heating needs will be met with solar collectors from the Swedish solar energy company Absolicon. The investment in solar energy is important for the project in achieving green building certification.

For Absolicon, it will be the third installation on a hospital roof

“We’re offering our unique solar collectors to hospitals all over the world,” say Absolicon’s Johan Bergström. “Hospitals are major consumers of electricity and they also have stringent demands for energy reliability. With our technology, the facility will receive both electricity and heat from its own roof.”

The installation will total 220 m2 and be conducted in collaboration with Tema, which is responsible for the construction project. The solar collectors, which track the sun during the day, will be installed on the roof and interact with the building’s district heating system.

“We’re building with environmentally correct materials and techniques,” says Gunnar Gedin, business area manager for Tema project managers. “The building will also have support for future systems for energy supply and goods transports.”

Work with the psychiatric clinic in Uppsala began in 2006 and completion is slated for 2013. This will be a new building for specialized psychiatry and it is being built in the Uppsala University Hospital’s core area. One of the objectives is to gather all psychiatric care at the same location.

“Our most recent hospital installation in India is more productive thanks to the high levels of solar radiation, but solar energy is even profitable for hospitals in Sweden,” says Joakim Byström, Absolicon’s founder.
