Absolicon Simulation in Dubai for industrial heat dairy processes

Solar radiation makes the site extremely suitable for the use of solar energy, moreover, the cheap availability of fossil fuel and fossil fuel lock-in, make Dubai a perfect scenario to test the economic feasibility of integrating Absolicon’s solar thermal technology for Dairy processes.

The Dairy sector

Dairy is a very heat-intensive industry. The significant consumers’ energy demand is 70% in the form of thermal energy.

Industries use heat energy for various processes like sterilization, CIP, pasteurization, and production of added-value products. The temperature requirement for dairy industries is in the range of 50°C to 200°C, with a pressure range of 3 to 4 bar which gives the Absolicon T160 solar collector multiple areas for implementation in the sector.

As the temperature requirement of the sector is in the medium temperature range, Absolicon patented technology, with an operational temperature of up to 160°C heat and 8 bar steam, suits perfectly the thermal energy demand of the Dairy industry providing a competitive and clean heat solution using solar resources.

To run a simulation in the Dairy sector, we selected an industry from Dubai.

To switch to solar thermal, for industries the technology must be economically feasible and technically possible to integrate for industrial heat needs, and the cheap availability of fossil fuel and fossil fuel lock-in, make Dubai a perfect scenario to test the economic feasibility of integrating Absolicon’s solar thermal technology for Dairy processes.

For checking the economic feasibility of solar thermal technology, it is required to find the cost of heat generated by the technology. IEA SHC (International Energy Agency, Solar Heating, and Cooling) described a parameter; Levelized Cost of Heat (LCoH) which can be used to compare different technologies. LCoH is the cost of heat generated by a heating device analyzed over a given period.

At present, Dubai does not have any carbon tax. Through analysis and calculation, the LCoH of the conventional boiler of the test case without considering carbon tax is found out to be 43.9€/MWh. The LCoH of the same system can go up to 60€/MWh if the country decides to have carbon pricing.

The Analysis

An analysis was done at three integration points in the Dairy industry:

– Feedwater pre-heating

– Process integration

– Direct steam integration.

It was observed that the Absolicon T160 Solar collector reduces the LCoH of the overall system in all three cases, and the best optimal value is obtained for process integration.

By integrating T160 for process integration, the system’s LCoH can be reduced by 60% to 26.4 €/MWh, with a significant reduction in carbon emission by 663 tons.
