Absolicon provide solar heat for industrial processes to Canary Islands Institute of Technology

Absolicon’s solar thermal technology has been selected in a public procurement of disruptive technology in the industrial sector in Canary Islands. Absolicon will install 88 m[2] solar collectors and the solar central unit for the value of € 123 000, at the Canary Islands Institute of Technology in Gran Canaria.

Absolicon’s technology has been selected in a pre-commercial public procurement (PCP) at Canary Islands. The Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC) sought disruptive technologies in the industrial sector to reduce the dependency and climate impact of fossil fuels. That is one of the objectives of European project ACLIEMAC https://www.acliemac.com/es/ coordinated by ITC. Absolicon’s solar thermal installation will serve as a reference for industries in Canary Islands to introduce solar heat in their processes.

The installation in the Canary Islands includes an 88 m2 solar thermal field of Absolicon T160 solar collectors located at ITC’s facilities in Pozo Izquierdo (Gran Canaria) and the solar central unit to produce steam at 4 bar. Absolicon will provide solar collectors and solar central unit for the value of € 123 000. Installation is planned during 2022.

The background of the PCP is a study performed by the ITC in the context of European project ENERMAC https://www.proyectoenermac.com/es/. In the study the final energy consumption of the Canary Islands and Cape Verde industrial sectors per range of temperature has been analyzed, together with the potential of implementing solar heat for industrial processes.

The report of the study sets out a big potential for the integration of solar thermal technologies that would reduce the consumption of conventional fossil fuels, and highlights most applicable industrial activities and processes for the integration of solar heat.

The PCP was called for solutions that, in addition to being a disruptive technology, can complete the entire process on competitive operational costs.

Absolicon T160 patented technology, with an operational temperature of up to 160°C heat and 8 bar steam, match the thermal energy demand in a wide range of industrial processes. The Absolicon solar collectors have the highest optical efficiency ever achieved by a small concentrating collector and the collector price is optimized by its streamlined design allowing mass production.

Absolicon technology is currently part of planned pilot projects for industrial heat in a brewery within the Carlsberg group in Greece and Anheuser-Busch InBev’s brewery in Mozambique.

In addition to the this, Absolicon technology are being implemented for water desalination in a pilot project in Saudi Arabia. Absolicon solar collectors have been delivered and mounted at the Desalination Technologies & Research Institute owned by the largest desalination company in the world, state-owned Saline Water Conversion Corporation and are soon to be operational.

In Kenya Absolicon is preparing installations for the tea industry together with WWF Kenya and Tealand Engineering & Construction Ltd and a pilot installation together with production line partner Ariya Finergy in Kenya for the energy company Iberafrica.
